CEO, Gorta Group, Ireland
Ray Joran is a veteran development professional with a record of work in eradicating poverty and hunger in sub-Saharan Africa through supporting enterprise and agriculture. Currently he is CEO of Gorta Group, which is Ireland’s oldest overseas development agency. He began his career as an engineer with the Missionaries of Africa. In the 1990s he lived and worked in Uganda. He was subsequently employed as head of Operations with GOAL participating in various relief missions such as those following Hurricane Mitch in Central America in 1998, the war in Afghanistan in 2001, in Darfur, Sudan in 2004, in post-Tsunami Indonesia, and following the Pakistani earthquake of 2005. He helped to create Self Help Africa, where he served as CEO before the organization merged in the Gorta Group.
