Ambassador and Co-lead of the Grand Bargain, Chairman of the Brussels Regional Forum of the DGAP – German Council on Foreign Relations
Michael Köhler serves as an Ambassador and Co-lead of the Grand Bargain (Geneva) and is Chairman of the Brussels Regional Forum of the DGAP – German Council on Foreign Relations.
Throughout his career, Michael Köhler has held various senior and management positions within the European Commission, focusing on international relations, humanitarian aid, and regional cooperation. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director-General and acting Director-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) at the European Commission. Prior to joining the European Commission, he worked as a Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Morocco and Tunisia. He also served in the Policy Planning Division of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Michael Köhler is a Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and teaches and Université Paris1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne and LUISS Guido Carlì in Rome. He is affiliated to a variety of foreign and development policy Think Tanks and institutes such as EGMONT, IEMED, ODI, or CHD. Köhler studied Medieval and Modern History, Oriental Studies, Comparative Religion, Theology, and International Law in Bonn and Tübingen and holds a Dr. phil. from the Universities of Hamburg.
