Petr Gandalovič graduated from Charles University Prague, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and started his professional life as a teacher. He started his diplomatic career as a Consul General of the Czech Republic in New York where he stayed until 2002.
After his return to Czechia he was elected a Mayor of the City of Ústí nad Labem and in 2006 a Member of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. In the same year he was nominated to the post of Minister of Regional Development and later of Minister of Agriculture for three years.
Between 2011 and 2016 he served as the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United States of America and then to the OECD in Paris. Currently he is working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs like the Director, Department for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid.
